(Oct.) Town meeting issues the order comes after a report reaches Boston that British troops in Maine are planning to march south along the coast and attack the town and after federal troops had abandoned New England. Hulks of ships are sunk at the entrance to the harbor to keep British ships out and gangs of axmen are organized to destroy bridges in case the rumored 15,000 British soldiers are landed.
