Boston Manufacturing Company Mill opens in Waltham.

September 30, 1814

(Fall) It is located on the site of the former John Boise Paper Mill on a dam across the Charles River at today’s 144 – 154 Moody Street. Created by Lowell and mechanic Paul Moody, it is the first integrated textile factory in the world, and spins and weaves raw cotton, then turns it into bolts of finished cloth. The factory is credited with beginning the industrial revolution in America, and Russell Adams Jr. subsequently writes, “Lowell was no mere mechanic. What he had in mind was nothing less than the prototype of the large modern corporation, the precursor of American big business.”
