Duchesne, Joseph. Model of the City of Boston.
1813
Created by a Frenchman, the 24-foot-long model of the city of Boston is built at a scale of 1 to 320. It features hundreds of buildings, includes part of Boston Harbor, and is described as being carved “with mathematical exactness” and painted with “astonishing realism.” Duchesne takes the model with him when he moves to Haiti. It is subsequently purchased by Boston merchant Supply Clapp Thwing, who donates it to the Massachusetts Historical Society in approximately 1845. It is displayed on Bedford Street and destroyed in the Great Fire of 1872.
