Appleton (Thomas Gold) is born in Boston.

March 31, 1812

Born in Boston on March 31, 1812 and the son of Nathan Appleton, Thomas Gold Appleton graduates from Harvard College, becomes a professor of literature, and a modestly successful writer, but becomes best know for his conversational ability and wit. One of the so-called Seven Wise Men of Boston, he was, according to Oliver Wendell Holmes, “The favorite guest of every banquet.” He builds a home at 10 Commonwealth Avenue in 1864.* Appleton dies in New York City on April 17, 1884.
