Jean-Louis Cheverus is named bishop of Boston.
April 8, 1808
[4/18] Pope Pius VII appoints Cheverus to the position after Fr. Matignon refused it due to his age and poor health. The first bishop of the Catholic diocese of Boston, Cheverus is installed on November 1, 1810. A scholar and very diplomatic, Cheverus later writes to John Carroll of Baltimore: “Papists are only tolerated. As long as our ministers behave, we will be tolerated. Let us expect no more than that.”
