Salem Turnpike Hotel is built.
1805
[1810-CHS] Built by Josiah Gurney it is located at today’s 16 Common Street. The short-lived hotel may have also included the adjacent house at 19 Putnam Street. The building is purchased by Thomas Rice in 1910 and converted to a home for the Rice family, which continues to occupy it until the early 20th century. 1900s. An addition is built in 1805 (1809-CHS). The wooden buildings are still standing.
