Beacon Hill begins to be cut down.
1810
The heirs of John Hancock begin to cut down the hill, presumably selling the gravel to developers. After buying the town-owned lot at the top of the hill in 1811, those same heirs remove it, and the gravel is used to fill the Mill Pond. A famous 1811 drawing shows the earth being cut away beneath the town beacon at the crest of the hill behind the State House.
