Ripley (George) is born in Greenfield.
October 3, 1802
The son of a farmer, George Ripley graduates from Harvard College and Harvard Divinity School, and moves to Boston in 1826 to become minister of the Thirteenth Congregational Church. He marries Sophia Dana on August 22, 1827. A member of the Transcendental Club and contributor to The Dial and other magazines, Ripley resigns as minister and, with his wife and others, founds Brook Farm in 1841.* Ripley moves to New York City in 1847 and becomes a journalist and one of the founders of Harper’s magazine. He dies in Hartford on July 4, 1880.
