Thomas Jefferson is inaugurated president in Washington, D.C.
March 4, 1801
Jill Lepore describes the event as marking “the first peaceful transfer of power between political opponents in the new nation, a remarkable turning point.” In his address, Jefferson declares, “Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names brethren of the same principle. We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists.”
