Boston Marine Hospital (first) is established.
1799
Created by the U.S. Public Health Service, it is located on Castle Island. The first Marine hospital in New England and the fourth in the U.S., it provides treatment to seamen and is supported by custom fees. It moves to a new building in Charlestown (second) in 1804,* to Chelsea (third) in 1827, and to Brighton (fourth) in 1940.*
