Nell (William Cooper) House is built.
1799
Built by white bricklayers William Lancaster and Banajah Brigham, it is located at 3 Smith Court. Beginning in around 1830, the two-family house rented to or owned by African American families, beginning with bootblack and waiter George Washington and barber Andrew Telford and his wife Rachel Turner. Clothing dealer James Scott lives here from 1839 until his death in 1888. In 1851, he rents part of the building to William Cooper Nell, who lives here from 1851 to 1865 (1850 to 1857-Tufts).
