Massachusetts Mutual Fire Insurance Company is established.

Founded by Moses Michael Hayes, Paul Revere and others, it is located in an office on State Street. It is the first successful property insurance company in the U.S. Charles Bulfinch designed the interior for the building, which is no longer extant.
