Alien Act is adopted in Philadelphia.

Passed by Congress and signed by President John Adams, the law lengthens the residency requirement for naturalization of citizens from five to 14 years and allows for the deportation of “troublesome aliens.” A new law returns the length of residency to five years in 1802, but declares that only a “free white person” could become a citizen.
