March 31, 1795
(ca.) Approved by the Massachusetts the legislature and signed by Gov. Samuel Adams, the law calls for building a new state capitol in Boston. It was passed only after Northampton, Plymouth, Worcester, and other towns competed unsuccessfully for the designation. Dorothy Hancock sells a portion of the family’s land on Beacon Hill for the site of the building on April 27, 1795, and the town subsequently votes to move the workhouse and almshouse from Park Street. The land is transferred to the state on May 2, 1795.
