Joy (John) House is built.
1791
Architect: Charles Bulfinch. The wooden house is located at today’s 34 1/2 Beacon Street. According to Michael Rawson, the house is built by the apothecary so that his ill wife “Could benefit from the country air.” But “she insisted that their stay away from the center of town be a short one.” The house is sold, dismantled, and rebuilt in South Boston in 1833. It is replaced on the site by house in 1835,* and then by an apartment building in 1887.*
