Three ships leave Boston for the Northwest and China.

1790

The Hope, Hancock, and Margaret sail for China, with the latter, captained by John Magee, described as “the best provided of any that ever sailed from this port.” Between 1790 and 1818, 102 U.S. ships arrive in the Northwest, compared to 22 from England. A list that names 63 of those ships, shows that 53 are from Boston. So many ships from Boston sail to the Northwest that the Native Americans call all traders “Boston men.”
