It is the first time the Boston population exceeds 17,000 since 1740. According to the first federal decennial census, Boston is the third most populous city in the U.S. (after New York City, 33,131, and Philadelphia, 28,522). Salem is seventh with 7,921. Of Boston’s total population, 17,554 are described as “free white persons;” 766 are described as “All other free persons.” 1,830 are described as foreign born. The separate towns of Roxbury, Dorchester and Charlestown have an additional combined population of 5,531, with 95 classified as non-white. The population of Brighton-Allston is 350.
