Seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is adopted.

December 13, 1780

Approved by the Massachusetts legislature and designed by Nathan Cushing, it features the image of an arm grasping a broadsword above the motto Ense Petit Placidam sub Libertate Quietem (“By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty.”) and of a standing Native American holding a bow in one hand surrounded by the motto Sigillum Reipublicae Massachusettensis (“The Seal of the Republic of Massachusetts”). The current version is established by the Massachusetts legislature in 1885. A committee to explore changing the seal is appointed on January 6, 2021.
