Boston Latin School suspends classes.

April 19, 1775

Headmaster John Lovell is reputed to tell the students, “War’s begun and school’s done; deponite libros.” Classes resume on June 5, 1776 under a new headmaster, since Lovell, a Loyalist, had sailed for Halifax during the Evacuation of Boston in 1776.* His son James, the assistant headmaster, had also sailed – but since James was a Patriot, he was taken along as a prisoner. After being held captive for 18 months, James returns to Boston as the result of a prisoner exchange.
