British East India Company begins to trade opium for goods in China.
1773
When the Chinese emperor forbids the importation of opium into the country by 1800, it only increases the drug’s value for smugglers – as do the increased fines for smuggling in 1817. This prompts Thomas Handasyd Perkins to begin purchasing opium from Turkey, where he buys half of the country’s production by 1823.
