Lowell (Charles Russell) is born in Newburyport.

The son of John and Rebecca (Tyng) Lowell, Charles Russell Lowell graduates from Harvard College, became a minister, marries Harriet Bracket Spence, and becomes pastor of the Third Church in Boston (Old West Church) in 1806. He lives near today’s 73 Tremont Street. Known for his kindness, short but pointed sermons, and work with the poor, Lowell subsequently moves to Elmwood in Cambridge. He dies, after saying, “I am going now,” on January 20, 1861. After a funeral at the Old West Church, he is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery.
