Sumner (Increase) House is built.

(ca.) It is located near today’s 100 Washington Street. The property is purchased by merchant Marshall Wilder in 1832.* Subsequently a member of the Massachusetts legislature and then the president of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society (1840-47), he names the estate Hawthorne Grove and proceeds to build a series of gardens and greenhouses and develop some 1,200 varieties of fruit over the next 50 years. The house is demolished and the property developed for multi-family residential use in 1925.
