Massachusetts Spy (first) is first published.
July 17, 1770
It is published by printer Zachariah Fowles and his apprentice, Isaiah Thomas, initially from Fowle’s shop on Salem Street. After ceasing soon after, it is revived by Thomas and is published from offices on the third floor at 41 Union Street in 1771. Frank Luther Mott subsequently calls it “The most incendiary publication of the colonies,” and Gov. Thomas Hutchinson unsuccessfully attempts to prosecute Thomas for libel in 1774. The last Boston issue appears on April 6, 1775. But three days later, Thomas smuggles the press and type out of Boston to Worcester, where he publishes the first account of the Battles of Lexington and Concord as the newspaper resumes publication on May 3, 1775. The last issue appears on May 27, 1904.*
