George Gailer is tarred and feathered and brought on a cart to the Liberty Tree.
October 28, 1769
The first of three people tarred and feathered during the Revolutionary era in Boston, Gailer was a member of the crew of Hancock’s sloop, Liberty, and is suspected of being an informer to customs officials regarding wine smuggled on board the ship. John Mein is also threatened with the same treatment for publishing the Boston Chronicle, a Loyalist newspaper.
