Pope’s Night celebration is subdued.
November 5, 1765
After leaders of the two North End and South End pledge not to engage in mischief, they hold a Union Pope Night.” In addition to the traditional effigies of the pope, they hang other effigies of “tyranny, oppression and slavery” from the Liberty Tree. According to the Boston Post-Boy, “The town remained the whole night in better Order than it had ever been on this occasion.”
