Stamp Act Riot (second) is held.
August 25, 1765
(& 8/26) Several hundred people attack the homes of Tory officials William Story near today’s 28 State Street and Benjamin Hallowell on Hanover Street. After midnight, they attack the home of Lt. Governor Thomas Hutchinson near today’s 5 Garden Court Street, where they break windows, loot the house, and scatter the manuscript of Hutchinson’s history of Massachusetts. The town militia turns out to prevent further disturbances, but Hutchinson and his daughter flee to their country home in Milton and Gov. Francis Bernard flees to Castle William. Hannah Mather Crocker later calls the riot “The flame of liberty” that encouraged the American Revolution.
