Sugar Act is adopted in London.

April 5, 1764

Officially the Revenue Act, it reenacts and expands the Molasses Act of 1733, reducing duties on goods containing sugar imported from any country but England, but increasing enforcement and attempting to reduce smuggling. The law particularly affects Boston because of the large volume of molasses it imports from the West Indies and because of its impact on the Triangle Trade of “molasses, rum, and slaves” that is so important to the town’s economy. The law goes into effect in Boston on September 29, 1764.
