Hallowell (Benjamin) House is built.

1738

It is located at the corner of Centre Street and Boylston Street near today’s 464 Centre Street. Purchased by the Hallowell family from the estate of John Dolbeare as a country home, it is abandoned when the family flees to Halifax after the Evacuation of Boston. The building is used as a hospital for Colonial troops during the Revolutionary War, then occupied by a Dr. Leprilete then by Jonathan Mason. Subsequently reclaimed by Hallowell’s widow and son, who assumes his mother’s maiden name of Boylston, it is purchased by Dr. Benjamin Wing in 1845.
