July 30, 1733
Originally the Provincial Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts, it is organized at the Bunch of Grapes Tavern at today’s 53 State Street. The first Masonic lodge in America and first fraternal society in Boston, it is organized by tailor Henry Price who received permission from Lord Montague, grand master of Masons in England, to do so. Members include John Hancock, Paul Revere, and Joseph Warren, but many are also wealthy merchants, who later take the Loyalist side on the question of independence . The lodge holds its first parade in 1748.
