Vassall (Leonard) Mansion is built.

1727

It is located at the corner of today’s Washington Street and Summer Street near today’s 436 Washington Street. Built for a wealthy West Indian planter, the home is purchased after his death in 1737 by Thomas Hubbard, who lives there for nearly forty years. It is then purchased by Loyalist Frederick William Guyer, then confiscated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is returned to Guyer in 1783, then purchased by Samuel Gardner in 1803. The building is demolished to make way for construction of a new building in 1854.*
