Old North Church is dedicated.

Architect: William Prince. Originally Christ Church and designed in the manner of Christopher Wren, it is located at today’s 193 Salem Street. The second Anglican church in Boston, it is the oldest church building in Boston proper. Timothy Cutler is the first minister and serves until 1765. The clock by Richard Avery is added in 1726, the steeple with a weathervane by Shem Drowne in 1740, and the bells by Abel Rudhall, the oldest in the Colonies, in 1754 [1745-PV]. From its steeple, a famous signal is given to Paul Revere in 1775,* and the building is subsequently used as a hospital for British troops. The steeple is toppled by the Great Gale of 1804, replaced by Charles Bulfinch in 1807, and replaced by a replica when it is again blown down by a storm in 1954.* The church is restored by R. Clipston Sturgis and Henry Ross in 1912, and is operated by the Old North Foundation since 1991.
