Eliot (Andrew) School (first) is built.
1713
Originally the North Grammar School and sometimes referred to as the North Latin School, it is built on land donated by Capt. Thomas Hutchinson and located on North Bennet Street. Recompense Wadsworth is the first master. Sometimes called the oldest grammar school in today’s U.S., it merges with the adjacent North Writing School in 1789 and is subsequently named for the pastor of the Old North church. The school is replaced by a new building (second) on the same site in 1792,* another (third) in 1838,* another (fourth) in 1860,* and by the current school (fifth) on Charter Street in 1932.*
