Long Wharf is completed.

1713

Originally Boston Pier, it is built by the Proprietors of Boston Pier, incorporated on July 14, 1772, which is given rights to the wharf for 40 years in exchange for construction of a 30-foot-wide public way “for the use of the inhabitants of Boston forever.” The oldest wharf in continuous use in today’s U.S., it is the longest pier in the Colonies at the time at 800 feet and allows ocean-going vessels to tie up directly at the dock. Construction began in 1710. An cross-wharf is added in 1718,* and by 1826, Long Wharf is 1,743 feet long and 104 feet wide. Long Wharf is acquired by the Boston Redevelopment Authority as part of urban renewal in the 1960s.
