Clarke-Frankland House is built.

1712

Designed in the Georgian style, it is located near today’s 31 Prince Street. (1711, North Square-Todisco). The 26-room brick house is built for Boston merchant William Clarke, and after his death is purchased by Sir Harry Frankland, collector of the Port of Boston. He lives here scandalously, with his former ward Agnes Surriage – until she rescues him from an earthquake in Portugal in 1754 and they return to Boston as man and wife. Purchased by Boston merchant Joshua Ellis in 1811, the building is demolished to widen what was then called Bell Alley in 1832.
