King Philip’s War ends.

August 12, 1676

Metacom, the Wampanoag sachem also known as King Philip, is killed at Mount Hope in today’s Bristol, Rhode Island, by Alderman, a Native American soldier serving under Capt. Benjamin Church. The final battle of the war takes place two weeks later near Rehoboth. After the war, efforts to convert Native Americans to Christianity are largely abandoned.
