Matoonas is executed on Boston Common.
August 6, 1676
(OS-7/27) The Nipmuck sachem is executed just as his son had been five years earlier. In this instance, he is tied to a tree and shot by Sagamore John, a fellow sachem, and other members of the tribe, who had turned him over to Colonial authorities, who place the head of Matoonas on a pike. A month later, Sagamore John and several of the other sachems who had been tricked into surrendering, are also executed on Boston Common.
