Samuel Sewall marries Hannah Hull.

February 28, 1676

She is the daughter of John Hull, who operates the town mint, and provides a dowry of £500. Nathaniel Hawthorne writes a short story entitled “Grandfather’s Chair” in 1850 thought to be based on the Sewall-Hull wedding, in which a bride’s dowry is worth her weight. Hull’s dowry in pine tree shillings, according to Mark Peterson, would be approximately 105 pounds.
