Rev. John Eliot and Daniel Gookin visit the Praying Indians on Deer Island.
December 31, 1675
(Dec.) According to Gookin, they find “The Island was bleak and cold, their wigwams poor and mean, their clothes few and thin.” Gookin is asked to recruit two of the Native Americans to spy among the Wampanoag and Nipmuck. He is voted out of office as Magistrate for being too sympathetic to the Native Americans in May 1676.
