Granary Burying Ground is established.
1660
Originally the New or South Burying Ground, then Central or Middle Burying Ground, it is located on land formerly part of Boston Common at today’s 101 Tremont Street. The third oldest cemetery in Boston, its gate is designed by Solomon Willard. Graves include those of 10 Massachusetts governors, the five victims of the Boston Massacre, Samuel Adams, Peter Faneuil, Benjamin Franklin’s parents, John Hancock, James Otis, and Paul Revere – but not that of Elizabeth Foster Vergoose (aka “Mother Goose”), rather the grave of Mary Vergoose, the first wife of Elizabeth’s subsequent husband. The cemetery contains some 2,300 headstones, but approximately 5,000 graves. It assumes its current name in 1737.
