Ship Tavern opens.

1651

[1667] It is located at the corner of today’s North Street and Clarke Street (Salutation Street and Commercial Street (then Ship Street)), and operated by John Vyall, who was given permission to open a tavern by the General Court, “provided he keep it near the new meeting-house.” Also known as Noah’s Ark, due to the resemblance of the ship on its sign to the Biblical one, the property is purchased by Thomas Hutchinson in 1695, and later owned by Samuel Mather. The tavern continues in operation for over 200 years.
