Explosion destroys the home and barns of Joseph Johnson.

Described by John Winthrop in his journal as “the surveyor general of the ammunition,” Johnson’s barns contain “17 barrels of the country’s powder and many arms.” The resulting explosion “shook the houses in Boston and Cambridge, so as men thought it had been an earthquake.”
