Rainbow sails from Boston for West Africa.
1644
Under the command of Capt. James Smith, its voyage is backed by a group of Boston merchants to bring back “gold dust Negroes.” It is the first American vessel authorized to engage the slave trade. The captain and crew subsequently meet up with English slavers in Guinea and engage in a battle with natives in which some 100 people are killed. The ship returns to Boston in 1645.*
