Metacom is born in Massachusetts.

1639

(ca.) Later known as King Philip, Metacom is the son of Massasoit (Ousamequin) and brother of Wamsutta (Alexander). Described as a man “of firm will, ambitious, proud-spirited,” he became the sachem of the Wampanoag after his father’s death in 1660, and makes his first visit to Boston in 1662.* Metacom initially honors treaties with European settlers, but tensions between the two groups lead to war in 1675.* He is killed by a Native American fighting for the Europeans near today’s Bristol, Rhode Island on August 12, 1676, and his body is brought to Boston and other towns for display in 1676.*
