Thomas Dudley is elected governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
May 24, 1634
(OS-5/14) In a continuation of the “Winthrop Mutiny,” Winthrop is turned out of office as the result of an election held over three days in the First Church in Boston. It is the first election conducted by secret ballot in ballot rather than a show of hands, the first in which the 24 Deputies from the eight plantations vote, and the first to include an election sermon, which is delivered by Cotton Mather. The election also includes a vote by the freemen vote to establish a new General Court on May 16, 1634.*
