Winthrop (John) House (first) is built.
October 31, 1631
It is located near today’s 53 State Street. The house is built from the remnants of an unfinished house that Winthrop had begun to build in Cambridge (then Newtowne). After a falling out with lieutenant governor Thomas Dudley, Winthrop had the house dismantled and moved to Boston, explaining that his decision came after Boston residents expressed the desire that he continue to live among them. Winthrop later writes that his new, large home was “full of company and business.” Forced to sell the home after his steward misappropriates much of his fortune, Winthrop builds a smaller home on Washington Street in 1643.* Both houses are subsequently demolished.
