Charlestown Ferry begins operating.

June 14, 1631

[5/16-BLC, 4/20] Operated by Edward Converse, it runs across Boston Inner Harbor from the foot of Copps Hill to near City Square in Charlestown. It is the first chartered ferry and public transportation service in the British Colonies. General Court directs profits from the ferry to be directed to Harvard College in 1640 they continue until the ferry ceases operation when a bridge is constructed nearby in 1786.*
