Sir Richard Saltonstall arrives in Salem.

Born in England in 1586, he was elected one of the colony’s assistants in 1629. After leading a group that settles in Watertown, he returns to England in 1631. His son Richard returns with his young family aboard the Susan and Ellen in 1633, settling in Ipswich. Richard fils returns to England several times, later writing “it doth grieve my spirit to heare what sadde things are reported dayly of your tyranny and persecutions.” He dies in Lancaster on April 29, 1694. His son Nathaniel settles in Haverhill at Buttonwoods, an estate known as the “Saltonstall Seat.” The family eventually becomes involved in the China Trade.
