Great House is built.

1629

Known also as the Governor’s House, it is located on what was then Town Hill in today’s City Square. The building serves briefly as the home of John Winthrop in 1630, then as a meeting house. It is purchased by the General Court in 1633, then by Robert Long and converted to the Three Cranes Tavern in 1635. It is expanded in 1672, and burned down by the British with the rest of Charlestown in 1775.* The site is donated by the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company to the town of Charlestown in 1794 for the expansion of Market Square.
