Hutchinson (Anne) is born in Lincolnshire, England.
July 17, 1591
Born Ann Marbury, Anne Hutchinson is the daughter of a minister, is educated at home, becomes a follower of Rev. John Cotton, and marries William Hutchinson. She arrives in Boston in 1634, lives near today’s 283 Washington Street, and becomes a midwife and lay healer. Hutchinson begins holding religious meetings at her home in 1635,* and her strong personality and Antinomian belief that “grace” alone is necessary for salvation, rather than in combination with “works,” bring her in conflict with church and lay leaders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637.* Hutchinson is banished to Rhode Island in 1638.* She and five of her children are killed by Native Americans in what is today The Bronx, New York, in August 1643.
