Thorfinn Karlsefne arrives in North America.
1008
(ca.) A Norwegian, he leads a group of 160 men on three ships that attempts to start a colony in a place called Kjalarness, which some sources later identify as Cape Cod. The effort is abandoned after three years, with Karlsefne noting, “Although the land had many good qualities, still would they be always exposed there to the fear of hostilities from the earlier inhabitants.” Subsequent attempts to establish settlements also fail and the Norsemen subsequently abandon their efforts to colonize America.
